FOUR SEAFARERS were killed 13 Jan 2011 when a fire broke out aboard a general cargo ship off Busan, South Korea.
GRT 1,412, Cambodia register ship M.V Yun Xing had eight crew members from China and one from Myanmar on board when the fire started, according to coastguard officials. Four of the Chinese seafarers died in the blaze, while the other five were rescued, AFP reported.The fire was put out in about two hours, but heavy smoke continued to cause problems for rescuers, the news agency said.
Officials suspect the fire was caused by a short circuit, the Yonhap news agency reported.Yun Xing was about two n-miles off Busan when the incident happened. It was not carrying any cargo.
The wordwide supply of seafarers in 2010 is estimated to be 624,000 officers and 747,000 ratings, while the curren worldwide demand for seafarers is 637,000 officers and 747,000 ratings according to BIMCO and ISF joint study of the worldwide supply and demand of seafarers.
There is 2% shortage in the supply of officers this year to cope with the higher demand.
